COVID Statement
COVID-19 Statement from CDSS
As CDSS Board member Pam Paulson has said often in the past few months, “We stay apart and wear masks so that when we come together, everyone is here.”
As COVID-19 continues unfolding on our continent, we all need to continue making adjustments in our actions and expectations. Although we don’t know everything about this virus, the medical community is learning more and more every month. Since March of 2020, for example, we’ve learned that it is very important to prevent aerosol transmission, particularly prolonged exposure in places with poor or internal ventilation. Reference. We’ve also learned that some people are asymptomatic carriers and that people who have COVID-19 may not all experience the exact same symptoms. Reference.
The introduction of vaccines to the picture gives us great hope—there is a light at the end of this tunnel! However, it’s extremely important not to rush back to large in-person gatherings too soon. We must be patient a bit longer in order to preserve the most lives. We will get there!
CDSS recommends that you follow your state guidelines as well as checking the CDC website to guide your decisions about events.
See below for additional recommendations for participants and organizers, along with links to helpful information. The most important thing is for everyone to take care of each other, prepare for events being cancelled or postponed, and actively monitor other websites, including WHO, Canadian Public Health, websites providing COVID-19 recommendations for your state, and this listing of Health Department websites by state.
For those organizing no-contact, socially-distant music or song events, we recommend outdoor or open-air settings only.
Here is an excellent interactive resource for monitoring the virus.
We encourage everyone—U.S. residents and Canadian residents alike—to read this article.
As we’ve already seen during the course of the pandemic, the dance, music, and song traditions we love will not go away because we need to hit the pause button for a while. They’ve made it through population migrations, world wars, the rise of digital entertainment, and are now weathering a modern worldwide pandemic. Dancing and singing together in person will continue with gusto after the initial virus has run its course, just as it did after the Spanish Flu pandemic 100 years ago. Be kind and understanding with the dancers, singers, musicians, callers, and organizers around you. Keep reaching out to each other and checking on the people in your community. We are all aching with the loss of togetherness, but we will get through this!

Resources for Organizers
CDSS Recommendations for Organizers
For those organizing no-contact, socially distant music or song events, we recommend outdoor or open-air settings only.
- See materials from our Web Chat series, Let’s Talk About Reentry (July and October 2020 and March 2021).
- Watch a recording of Dance Flurry's discussion with public health experts and dance community leaders, When Can We Safely Dance Again?
- Meet with your team to discuss ways to keep your community connected and engaged during this time. (Check out our list of crowd-sourced ideas from other organizers or our calendar of online events for inspiration.)
- Add your online music or dance event to our calendar!
- Actively monitor recommendations from the WHO, the CDC, and your state health department.
- Plan ahead now for cancelling events:
- Look into the costs you will have to pay facilities.
- Stay in contact with your community.
- Communicate with the musicians, callers, sound engineers, and other talent lined up for gigs, and remember that this is a hardship on those who depend on our gig economy. Be transparent and kind with them.
- Think of individuals in your community who you can reach out to for short-term financial help if needed.
- When cancelling an event:
- Consider providing pre-registered attendees an option to donate all or part of their registration fee to help offset event costs and reimburse talent. Be mindful that not everyone will be in a position to do this. See an example here.
- Also consider creating a way for would-be attendees to contribute to the musicians, callers, and sound techs who are losing income. See an example here.
- CDSS recommends that you follow your state guidelines as well as checking the CDC website to guide your decisions about events. If you are going ahead with a modified music or song gathering, please think about ways to reduce the risk of transmission:
- Host the event outside or in an open-air setting.
- Follow social distancing protocols, including masks.
- Inform your community about disease prevention.
- Coordinate in-depth sterilization procedures for the facilities you use.
- Encourage people to wash hands before, several times during, and after an event.
- Think through adjustments to how people enter your event (hand sanitizer, encouragement to wash hands upon arrival, posted
- recommendations, etc.).
- Rather than providing communal snacks and water, encourage people to bring their own.
- Request donations of hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes.
- Monitor your area’s current risk level:

Resources for Participants
CDSS Recommendations for Participants
For Participants (dancers, singers, musicians, etc.)
Be prepared for in-person events to continue to be cancelled or postponed. Remember that having to cancel an event can be a financial hardship for your local organization. If a special event you care about is cancelled and you’re in a position to do so, consider allowing the organization to keep all or part of your registration fee to cover non-refundable facility deposits and provide support for cancelled callers, musicians, and sound engineers, and other talent. You can also support artists by purchasing their merchandise. And please consider making a larger donation to your local organization this year.
Please initiate self-quarantine and refrain from social interaction if:
- You have any flu-like symptoms, including fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.
- You returned from travel in the last 3 weeks to an area with sustained local transmission (not just a travel ban/warning). Read the travel advisories from the CDC and Government of Canada.
- You have had close physical contact with a person currently under investigation for COVID-19, or who is a confirmed case of COVID-19.
Many people in our fold are at higher risk, by virtue of their age, their compromised immunity, or other issues. Even if you are not at risk yourself, diligently adhering to these preventative measures could save lives.

Send Love to Freelancers
While so many of us are mourning the temporary loss of our favorite dance and song events, for thousands of callers, musicians, singers, and sound technicians, the cancelling of these events has resulted in a significant loss of work and income. We believe that our community is one of the best in the world at supporting its members; now is the time to lift each other up!
Let’s show these talented folks our love! Click on a link below to send some kindness, business, or funds to the callers, musicians, singers, and sound technicians who make our lives so sweet. And check out our growing calendar of online events!
(In case you’re wondering, we did look into the possibility of establishing a charitable relief fund, but the IRS would require that we implement needs assessments and maintain a lot of records, which would ultimately result in restrictions and limitations on the funds. By connecting donors directly to artists, we are able to reduce additional administrative burden on the artists, foster strong community connections, and keep the IRS happy! Plus, donating directly to an artist will get funds to them much faster!)
Freelancers are listed below in random order for fairness's sake.

Many thanks to all who have danced to my playing with Bare Necessities and others, invited me into their homes and attended my concerts over the years! I’ve been rewarded by your friendship but have not amassed a nest egg for hard times. This year, I’ve spent my spare cash on an upcoming solo CD of my “I Lift My Lamp—Vintage Songs and Dances of Immigrant America” program. I look forward to sharing it with you in on-line concerts soon. See my Jacqueline Schwab FB performer page or e-mail me.

I am available to teach virtual guitar lessons - contact me if you'd like to give it a try. I'm also always looking for ways to get my music to more sets of ears. Consider buying some of my CDs or putting them in the soundtrack of your next blockbuster movie. I will probably not have any performance income for most of this year, but I'm not the only bread winner in the family. If you want to give money directly, please do so to those who have no other means of supporting themselves.
I would be incredibly grateful if you can buy any of my recordings, for yourself or as gifts for your friends. Download from where ever you buy music or order from my website. Albums include a collection of original waltzes, three CD's from Elixir, two from the Morrison Brothers Band, and one each from Night Watch and House Red. Give them to everyone you know if you want! Thanks to CDSS for thinking of us freelancers! As an Irish musician, St. Patrick’s Day season was a financial washout. More importantly, I work each day as a freelance preschool music, dance, and theater teacher, in eight schools and two libraries. Only one has offered to pay me - for two weeks. Any amount you can contribute to the cause of future singers, dancers, and thespians, I would greatly appreciate (and my family would, too). Thank you! We’re in this together!

Before the virus, I was teaching 3 clogging/flatfoot classes at 3 different levels. I was offering my first weekend workshop in Asheville April 17-19 which will most likely be cancelled and I'm scheduled to teach a weekend in Floyd, VA June 26-28. Floyd won't invest time in marketing until closer to the date, which makes sense since we don't know if it can happen. I've also had to cancel the classes that I offer through Airbnb experiences and lost 3 students Friday. I've lost >50% monthly income.

In this time when all of our performance venues are closed --- schools, libraries, historic sites, churches --- it is an amazing thing to see the community coming together in this new & positive way. We are currently learning how to do live streaming, in the hopes that our first effort will be to bring the community together in a virtual sing-along this coming May Day. I'm grateful to CDSS for drawing our collective attention to the ways that this crisis affects various individuals in our dance, music, and song communities. As a single parent whose primary income relies on dance leadership, I'm curious about what changes I'll make in the coming months. Like others, I trust in resilience and ingenuity. As a longtime organizer, I'm aware of the vulnerability of volunteer-run organizations, especially those whose finances have little or no margin. I'm also aware that those of us in the CDSS network are especially fortunate---we have strong social networks and we know how to take care of each other. Too many people in our towns, states, regions, and nations do not. I hope we all reach out to support our local communities in every way we are able.
