Early Music Week at Pinewoods

Monday May 16, 2016

Attendees of CDSS Early Music Week at Pinewoods, past and current,

As you may know, attendance at CDSS Early Music Week at Pinewoods has been volatile and trending down. In 2014, CDSS committed to continuing the week through 2016. We enlisted a group of Advisors made up of past Program Directors and faculty to work on some adjustments to the program and focus of outreach with the goal of revitalize Early Music Week without changing it beyond recognition. With Larry Zukof and Jan Elliott directing and many advising, we made some good changes in 2015, increasing the vocal program, strengthening the advanced program with Accademia (a special concentration for advanced musicians), while stressing the availability of beginning instrument workshops for people who came to us primarily as dancers. It was a very good week and Larry has built on those strengths for 2016. Details of this year's program are available at www.cdss.org/em.

To date, registration is not up. In fact, registration is 17 fewer than this time last year. I had a very good phone meeting with the Early Music Week Advisors to discuss what aspects of Early Music Week can be continued if we can't make the needed numbers. Because Early Music Week has such a broad scope, we could not find a pared down program with a similar overall structure that could share time at Pinewoods with another program. We are still considering running a Recorder Course at another week, or even add recorder classes to several weeks, but recognize that would reduce the immersion in the repertoire, and not satisfy the singers and viol and "louds" players among you. It certainly loses the pageantry and the wonderful faculty concerts and lectures that are so much a part of CDSS Early Music Week at Pinewoods.

It still remains that if Early Music Week is not viable as is, CDSS can't afford to continue to run it. In short, if we have not reached a total population of 110 by June 10, we need to make drastic changes for 2017. Gaining 25 registrations in the next 2 weeks will preserve the week for 2017; this is quite possible! Last year we gained 20 in this time; the result of a tendency toward later and later registration. But we also need to plan further and further ahead, and 2017 planning is already delayed by this uncertainty. Some of you are already registered (GREAT) and some of you know that you cannot come (we will miss you), but if you can/intend to come, PLEASE register very soon, and see if you can bring along another musician or potential musician.

Even if we reach this number, we need to find ways to bring in new people to the week and to keep more of the new people returning, if the week is to continue without this storm cloud over it. Many of us dearly love this week and the spirit and community it gathers together. We are trying hard to make it work, but we will need to consider alternatives if there is not the market for it. Let's join together to reach this goal for 2016, and continue the conversation of what can be done to bring more people along.

Please feel free to email me and to join the discussion on the Early Music Week Facebook group

Many thanks,

Steve Howe
Director of Programs, Country Dance and Song Society
