On Friday last, died very suddenly, (of an apoplexy) Mr.
Samuel Granger, Writing-Master, in this town, aged 48 years.
As the gentleman's singular learning and ingenuity in his
profession is universally known and admired, so his death
will without doubt be equally lamented. As it is not only
superfluous, but really a disparagement, to say a great deal
in commendation of persons or things, which are evidently
known to be very good; therefore I shall only say, in
justice to Mr. Granger, that by his death the publick is
bereaved of a most useful member, the church has lost a good
Christian, and the youth of this town are deprived of a
master, the most eminent and useful in his profession, of
any that every yet adorned this part of the world.
Perhaps some people, who are fond of words, may think that
Mr. Granger deserves a more elaborate character : And it
must be acknowledged, that the vast accomplishments of this
celebrated and ingenious gentleman afford a subject copious
enough for the most florid panegyrick; but such a
declamation seems needless, Mr. Granger having in his life-
time, raised a more lasting monument of his worth, in the
hearers and affections of all such as were favoured with his
conversation: especially such gentlemen who had the
happiness to be educated by him, and will transmit his name
down to posterity with the greatest marks of esteem and
veneration.
