Hague Aug 10. N.S. . . . The Marquis de Fenelon's ordering
the drum to be beat on Saturday last, to give notice to his
creditors to come and take their money, has occasion'd a
great deal of diversion here; because it is never practiced
but when a minister is going away, which is not the
Marquis's case: But having no other politick spring to
play, to prevent the accession of the states of Holland, who
had appointed that day to resume the said affair, he thought
the Feint of his sudden departure would shew such a
resentment on the part of his court, that those states, ever
cautious of giving offence to France, would hardly make any
progress in their work: But when the Marquis saw his
mistake, and that some people made themselves very merry
about it, he disowned it, and threw it all upon his steward,
who (he said) had done it without his knowledge. However,
His Excellency was so unfortunate, as not to make any one
believe that part of the story. For the rest, this step of
the Marquis occasioned a report, which is still current, and
particularly upon the exchange of Amsterdam, that the Court
of France is so angry with their High Mightiness, as to
threaten them with a rupture.
