Last Thursday, agreeable to appointment of his excellency
the governour and the hon. council of state, was observed in
this city by solemn thanksgiving and praise to almighty God,
for the late signal success with which, out of his unbounded
goodness and mercy, he has been pleased to bless the arms of
the American states. . . [11 more lines noting the sermons
preached on the occasion.] Next evening the members of the
general assembly gave a grand ball and entertainment at the
Capitol, at which were present all the ladies and gentlemen
in this city and neighbourhood, many from different parts of
the country, the military gentlemen, and the strangers then
in town. Thirteen rounds from two pieces of cannon placed
before the Capitol, the names of Washington, Gates, &c. &c.
announcing each discharge, preceded the festivity, during
which gaiety and good humour enlivened the ball, and
socialness and jollity presided at the banquet.
