London, August 8. Tuesday evening was performed at the
Theatre Royal, Haymarket, the Comedy of the Miser, for the
benefit of Mr. Shuter, when the probability of this
excellent comedian's appearing once more in publick spoke in
the countenances as well as the plaudits of a respectable
and crowded audience. Nor did this droll's usual humour
forsake him in this momentary release from confinement, but
broke out on two or three occasions in the course of the
performance; for when mentioning to himself that he had
secreted three thousand pounds, and afraid he is overheard
by his servant, he replies, "Not that I have got three
thousand pounds in the world;" and then added, with a look
of significance, "For I'm sure if I had it would make my
little affairs perfectly easy." In another part, when
Lappet compliments him on his person, he replied, "Ah, Mrs.
Lappet, see what the air of St. George's Fields will do."
In short, during the course of the entertainment, a mutual
satisfaction was kept up between the performer and his
numerous friends; after which the former returned thanks to
the audience, in a very feeling and obliging manner.
