London . . . June 24. . . The lord mayor intends very soon
to invite the common council to dinner, and to give a ball
in the evening to the ladies.
The story of the new piece entitled the Maid of Bath, now
preparing at Mr. Foote's theatre, is founded on fact. A man
of large fortune, but considerably advanced in years (S-- W-
- L--), lately paid his addresses to a young lady of bath
(Miss I.) who boasted no advantages besides youth, beauty,
and great merit. The day for their nuptials was set apart,
and the affair made publick by the friends of both parties.
On the eve of the wedding, however, the grey headed gallant
changed his mind, and decamped without beat of drum, to the
inconceivable astonishment of his intended bride, on whose
conduct calumny itself had not attempted to fasten the
smallest imputation.
The Maid of Bath, with a true spirit of generous
indignation, has returned her recreant admirer, we hear, all
the diamonds with which he presented her, amounting to near
four thousand pounds.
It is now certain that the rumour of an intended marriage
between Sir Walter Long and Miss Linley, of Bath, is
entirely without foundation.
