London.  Extract of a letter from a lady at Paris, February

must tell you (in answer to your entertaining account of the
late Soho masquerades) that I, with all my moralizing
against the veil, was a temporary nun no longer ago than
last week; but then, indeed, my professing cost neither a
sigh to myself nor a tear to my friends.  I was at a masked
ball in that character. They are very frequent here; the
dauphiness gives one every week; but, in order to prevent
the excess of expense, which those balls might otherwise
occasion, she gives them on the express condition that no
person shall be admitted in dresses better than lutestrings.
  Lord S. lately addressed a lady, in a publick assembly,
and told her, "he had heard that her ladyship had spoke of
him in a very disrespectful manner;" on which her ladyship,
with a great deal of humour, patted him on the head, and
said, "Indeed, my good lord, there is nothing in it. . . .
