The inhabitants of Stratford upon Avon have lately presented
the freedom of their corporation to David Garrick, Esq; in a
box, the wood of which was planted by the immortal
Shakespear's own hand, and the representation of the storm
scene in King Lear carved thereon, value sixty guineas; it
was accompanied with a curious penknife which belonged to
that great genius. The corporation have since made Mr.
Garrick a burgess of the town, and at the same time
requested to have his picture to put up in the Town-hall.
Mr. Garrick has sent one for that purpose.
At the Anniversary Meeting of the Sons of the Clergy at
St. Paul's, the collection was only 794 l. which was 111 l.
less than last year, the reason was partly owing to the
Ridotto al Fresco, being the night before at Vauxhall
Gardens, there being above 7000 persons there, and admitted
at half a guinea each, so that instead of a rehearsal of
musick at St. Paul's, for that charity, it will be better to
have yearly a Ridotto al Fresco, at Vauxhall Gardens: Above
500 of the persons who went there were left dancing 'til six
o'clock in the morning, there were many fancy dresses, and
above 500 were admitted by 10 the evening before; that night
not a hackney coach was to be seen in London.
