On Wednesday the 4th of June, being the King's birthday, the
gentlemen of Hampton and Elizabeth City county, . . .
celebrated their joy on the happy repeal of the Stamp Act. .
. [20 toasts, other events] In the evening there was a ball
and supper at the King's Arms tavern, which the Ladies
graced with their company; during which the populace
concluded their rejoicing, by a repetition of the healths
round a large bonefire. The whole day passed with the
greatest joy, decency, and unanimity.
Great Bridge, Norfolk County, June 6. On the 20th of May
we received at this place a confirmation of the interesting
and agreeable news that his majesty has been graciously
pleased to give his royal assent to the bill for repealing
the stamp act. . . . [4 paragraphs, then]
At sunset there was another discharge of cannon, and the
colours were struck; and general illumination, bonefires,
&c. took place. The evening concluded with a very elegant
ball and entertainment, at which the gentlemen and ladies
made a genteel appearance, and seemed to vie with each other
in demonstrations of joy on the happy occasion. The whole
was conducted with the great decorum, so that envy, and even
detraction itself, must be silent on the occasion.
