London, Oct. 24. . . Last week a brilliant young lady of the
first water, intending the tour of France, and without doubt
to appear in full lustre there, sent a card to a grave
merchant of this city to enquire the character of a valet,
lately discharged that gentleman's service, containing the
following remarkable but important questions: Can he
flourish a flambeaux well? Can he breed a riot in a
playhouse? And can he give a genteel rap at a door? To
this billet the good old gentleman returning no other
answer, than that he was a very honest, sober, and diligent
fellow the lady was pleased immediately to dismiss him as
unqualified for such an expedition.
