Tuesday last being the birth day of his Excellency General
Washington, was observed in ths city, with every public and
private demonstration of joy. . . [4 lines] In the evening
there was a numerous and brilliant assembly of ladies and
gentlemen from this city and the neighbouring country;
upwards of one hundred ladies, and an equal number of
gentlemen being present; the economy, decorum and propriety
of which, could only be exceeded by the festive mirth and
social happiness which appeared in every countenance,
affording the surest testimony of unaffected regard to the
character of the illustrious Washington, whose years may
heaven multiply. . .
