Translation of a letter from a French officer to his friend
in --- Camp at Verplank, September 32, 1782.
We joined the American army some days ago. Yesterday the
French army was reviewed by his Excellency George
Washington... [33 lines describing military festival in
honor of American allies.] The day was terminated with an
entertainment of more than ninety covers, served with true
military magnificence, in the pretorium of the consul (for
I rather express my self thus than by saying, in the tent of
the general.) In fact, every thing in this army bears a
particular character; and things uncommon ought not to be
described by common expressions. A band of American music
which played during the dinner, added to the gaiety of the
company. . . [11 more lines of praise.]
