Extract of a letter from Providence, dated August 22. I am
sorry to inform you, that the communication between
Philadelphia and Newport is cut off--occasioned by the
captain of a man of war taking our post-rides, &c. At this
place we are all in confusion: -- There are three men of war
now in sight, and the people much alarmed: They are beating
to arms. --I apprehend the men of war will not be able to
hurt us, as they cannot come near enough for that purpose,
and the water-side is well fortified.
