London, August 30. Some account of the behaviour of Mr.
Ryland, and the other convicts, who were executed yesterday.
. . [1/3 column]
Mr. Lloyd was the next, and, to the surprise of every
body, had thrown aside the decent black he wore on his
trial, and was clothed with an orange coloured coat. All
that audacity which had marked a most abandoned life,
forsook him at this awful period. He was intent on prayer,
sung aloud, and expressed himself perfectly resigned. . .
[1/2 column describing arrival of Ryland and Lloyd at place
of execution.] Lloyd was no sooner in the coach, than he
prayed in an audible voice, and till he reached the fatal
spot, he ceased not to pray and sing with every appearance
of devotion. . . [22 lines, storm intervened] After a
conversation of at least ten minutes between Ryland and Mr.
Villette, Ordinary at Newgate, and the same time employed in
an earnest discourse between Lloyd and Burgess, all the
malefactors joined in singing the hymn, called "The Sinners
Lamentation," neither of them expressing any extraordinary
agitation but Lloyd, who was continually wringing his hands,
and devoutly appealing to Heaven. . .
