Yesterday being the anniversary of our sovereignty and
independence, the same was observed here with every
brilliant appearance suitable to the day. At nine o'clock in
the morning, a detachment of the Continental Artillery, with
five field pieces, and the militia of this town, paraded in
Meeting-Street, attended with a Band of Music, Colours,
Drums, and Fifes.

At 11 o'clock the procession began in the following manner:
His Excellency the Governor, . . . General Greene, General
Guest, and the other gentlemen in order, went in front of
the Artillery and Militia, who received the procession with
Presented Arms, Music, Drums and Fifes, Colours Flying, and
the officers saluting his Excellency as he passed down
Broad-Street to the Exchange,

after which the following toasts were given, accompanied
with 13 guns, vocal and instrumental music performing God
save the Thirteen States, after the first toast, and
particular pieces of music after every other, the last
consisting with a solemn Dirge of Music and Artillery for 13
minutes:
