The following are the two Presentments of the Grand Jurors
at the last sessions for this District, which were Quashed,
and therefore not ordered to be published amongst the rest--
and are here inserted by particular desire.
. . . [1 Article]
IX. We present as a grievance, the Company of Players, A
Play-House in Charles-Town, being unfit for the present low
estate of the Province; for, although there is great want of
money to procure the conveniencies, and even the necessaries
of life, yet large sums are weekly laid out for amusements
there, by persons who cannot afford it; and is a means of
promoting the frequent robberies that are committed, and of
vice and obscenity. We recommend, that the Legislature may
suppress the same, tending to the corruption of youth, and
the injury of many families.
[Article IX was quashed by the Court, prior to being issued]
