[Article on advantages of the Stage and Drama follows verse
below]
"I dare, with truth, commend
"The decent stage, as virtue's nat'ral friend;
"Tho' oft debas'd with scenes profane and loose,
"No reason weighs against its proper use:
"Tho' the lewd priest, his sacred function shame,
"Religion's perfect law is still the same."
The praises and advantages of the Drama, have employed the
pens, of so many moral, as well as ingenious writers, and is
a subject so exhausted, that the most difficult task will
be, to avoid repeating what has already been said in its
favour.
. . . [2 columns, on the stage, discussing Rome, Europe,
tragedies, comedies, Addison, Young, Rowe, Hoadly, Home]
[Article continued to p. 2 for 2 more columns]
[Article mentions a sermon preached in Charles-Town against
gaming, drunkenness, profane swearing, as well as the
theatre, which is being erected. Mention is also made of the
fact the Manager has been able to conduct a theatre in
Philadelphia, known for the strictness of its morals and
police]
