Seeing a book lay upon a table the other day, curiosity
prompted me to peep into it, which I happened to open at a
part where the author treats of the incessant war between
good and bad company.

The sons of our lowest mechanics are sent to the colleges of
Philadelphia, England, or Scotland, and there acquire, with
their learning, the laudable ambition of becoming gentle-
folks, despite their paternal occupations, and are all
solicitous for the more honourable employments of Doctors,
Lawyers, and Parsons; whilst the pretty little misses at
home are exercised in no professions at all, except those of
Music and Dancing, which it must be confessed, make them
very agreeable companions, but will render them very
expensive wives.
