Index Entry Bell ringers, in Charleston, St Michael's, Clerk responds to charges
Location Charleston
Citation
SCG-C.767.029
13-27 Apr 1767:21 (32/1652)
Sir, In your last week's paper, I observed an advertisement,
wherein 'tis said, "The old Ringers have not met this five
months, owing to the avarice of the C---k, in shewing them
while ringing, to all comers and goers, for his own private
interest."
. . . [Letter denies the allegations in the referenced
advertisement. Apparently fees were given for people to go
up to see the bells while they were ringing]
I was not in the steeple that night the book Mr. Davis gave
the Ringers was sent there, neither did I see it 'till some
time after.
. . . [Allegations denied]
[signed] Clerk of St. Michael's
