Anecdotes of the Portugueze.
At a French Ball; where many of the Portugueze nobility were
present, a dispute arose, while the company were at supper,
betwixt Don Joseph de Noronha, a son of the Count of Arcos,
and Don Antonio de Menendez; in which the former struck the
latter; who, in return, had seized a bottle, and was to
repay the injury by throwing it at his adversary's head, but
was unfortunately prevented. Had he done it, his honour had
been recovered; but as he could not, he remains with the
indelible stain of a blow.
