Extract of a letter from Antigua.
The conduct and behaviour of a great sea officer sent from
England by the indulgence of His Majesty, and at a very
great expence to the nation, to protect these islands and
the trade thereof, being only farcical (if not worse) became
the subject of a puppet-shew; an entertainment answering
full as many purposes as any thing he hath done since he
took command, or indeed since Admiral Warren and Mr. Knowles
left us. One scene however is remarkable, for (after an
alarm) Punch entered, raising himself beyond his usual
height, with contracted belly, gant-sides and meager face,
demanded the cause, to which his brothers puppetts reply'd,
'twas to pursue the enemy; he sternly enquired which door
they went out at, which being plainly and directly made
known to him; he with his usual intrepidity and conduct
marched out at the opposite.
