From the London Magazine.
An Extraordinary Petition to Parliament, from Several Ladies
of Quality.'
It first set forth in general, the many and great
inconveniencies, which accrue to the publick from the
observation of Sunday: For which reason the petitioners
humbly hoped, that the wisdom and authority of Parliament
would interpose, to deliver the good people of England from
so terrible a restraint. That the petitioners, especially,
were in the utmost perplexity and distress how to contrive
means to render the day tolerable to them; and that since
cards, plays, operas, balls, masquerades, &c. were all
prohibited, they were inevitably, on that day, either asleep
or in the vapours. . . [1 column. A group of inferior
ladies drew up a remonstrance:] It imported in substance,
that if the petition was granted, the case of the
remonstrants would be very deplorable, inasmuch as no time
at all would be then allowed them for diversion from the
business of their shops and families; whereas on Sundays (as
they were now observed) they had the pleasure of shewing
their fine cloaths, visiting their acquaintances, going to
church where they could see good company, learn the
fashions, ogle the men, and in a word, reap all the benefits
and advantages of a play, without the expense of it. . .
