Extract of a letter from an American gentleman in England,
dated April 26, 1778. . . An intimate friend from whom I
received a letter this morning, saw this most gracious
Father of his People [George III of England] at the theatre
but the night before, where he expressed his approbation by
the most immoderate fits of laughter at the dull, unmeaning
passages of an Italian opera. The whole tenor of his
conduct has been uniformly the same. His callous soul never
felt an uneasy sensation. Wrapped up in the most
extraordinary state of insensibility, he is neither moved at
the complicated difficulties of his subjects, or the
miseries of those that were once so.
