London, May 17. Mr. Garrick accepted his freedom of the
borough of Stratford upon Avon in the politest manner and
returned the following answer: "Gentlemen, I cannot
sufficiently express my acknowledgments for the honor you
have done in electing me a burgess of Stratford upon Avon, a
town that will ever be distinguished and reverenced as the
birthplace of Shakespeare. There are many circumstances
which have greatly added to the obligations you have
conferred upon me. The freedom of your town, given to me
unanimously, sent to me in such an elegant and inestimable
box, and delivered to me in so flattering a manner, merits
my warmest gratitude. It will be impossible for me to
forget those who have honoured me so much as to mention my
unworthy name with that of my immortal townsman. I am,
gentlemen, your most obliged, humble servant. London, May 8
1769 D. Garrick"
