London. April 2. . . The ball and supper given at the
Queen's Palace on Thursday evening, was conducted nearly
after the manner as that given some time ago: The King's
table had eight covers, which consisted of their Majesties,
their Royal Highnesses the Princess Royal, and Princess
Elizabeth, the Duchess of Argyle, and the Ladies Hertford,
Egremont, and Essingham. In an adjoining apartment, a table
of thirty two covers was laid, at which his Royal Highness's
right hand sat her Grace the Duchess of Hamilton, and on the
left Lady Augusta Campbell; Lady Viscountess Weymouth sat
opposite to the Prince, and on the right hand and left of
her Ladyship sat Lord Cathcart, and the Hon. Mr. Legge; the
rest of this noble company consisted of the Dukes of Dorset,
Hamilton, and Gordon, the Marquis of Graham, Earls of
Aylesford and Westmoreland, Lord Parker, the Hon. Mr. North,
Mr. Fitzroy, and Mr. George Pitt, Lady Frances Finch, Lady
Hyde, the Hon. Miss Thynne, the Hons. Miss Howard, &c. At
the third table were upwards of forty covers, at which the
Lords in Administration, the great Officers of the Court,
and several of the Nobility, &c. of both sexes were present.
The company began coming in the evening, soon after eight
o'clock, and at nine they began dancing; at a quarter after
twelve the company sat down to supper, and before two they
returned to the ball room, where they continued dancing
country dances till near six yesterday morning. Their
Majesties did not retire till half an hour after five. The
Prince of Wales danced with Lady Augusta Campbell, and was
superbly dressed in a brown coloured velvet, ornamented with
frogs, composed of the finest paste, which taking its near
resemblance to the brilliant, had at the same time the most
novel and agreeable effect imaginable.
