London. July 9. On Tuesday last the President and
Governors of the Radcliffe Infirmary at Oxford, had their
Anniversary Meeting, when an excellent sermon on the
occasion was preached at St. Mary's Church, by the Lord
Bishop of Chester: in the course of the service were
introduced a grand Te Deum and anthems, and in the evening
the favorite oratorio of Judas Maccabeus, for the benefit of
the Infirmary in the Theatre, under the direction of Dr.
Hayes, Professor of Music. The whole of which was performed
to the general satisfaction of the auditors: And yesterday
morning the Right Hon. Frederick Lord North, attended in
procession by his Vice Chancellor, the heads of Houses,
Doctors, Proctors, Nobility, the Right Rev. the Bishops, &c.
in their respective robes, took his seat in the Theatre as
Chancellor of the University; upon the entering of which he
was ushered in by a band of music with a grand spirited
overture, which ended, the Convocation was opened by the
Chancellor, immediately after the Ode, written by the
learned and Rev. Dr. Wheeler, and set to music by Dr. Hayes,
was performed by a very numerous and excellent band, led by
the celebrated Sig. Giudini, under the conduct of the
Professor, to a crowded and brilliant audience; which if we
may judge from the general plaudit given to it, does great
honour to both the worthy and ingenious authors. Many
persons, according to the usual forms upon these occasions
were admitted to their degrees by the Chancellor. An
excellent Latin Oration was also spoken on this day, in
commemoration of Founders and Benefactors. In short, the
respectable characters who honoured the University with
their presence at this juncture, the variety of its
academical entertainments, and the joy which appears in
every countenance, all conspire to reflect a lasting honour
upon our Alma Mater.
