Anecdote from the Spanish Inquisition, by an Eye Witness.
The autillos de Fe are still celebrated at the tribunal of
the Inquisition, more or less publicly, according to the
impression which is to be made. A great number of persons
of all ranks, civil and ecclesiastical, where summoned to
attend the office, at eight o'clock, on the 24th Nov. 1778,
without knowing whether they were to accuse or be accused.
They were admitted into a room, and thence introduced into a
saloon contigious. . . every body having taken their places,
a side door opened, and Don Pablo Olavide appeared, attended
by two men in black; . . . The whole concluded with the holy
tribunal's finding him guilty of errors against the Roman
Catholic faith. . . [sentence pronounced-banishment]  A door
then opened, and four priests, with rods or canes, came in;
and while a miserere was sung, they gently tapped him on the
shoulders with them. . .
