Copy of Major Batt's, letter to Lieutenant-Colonel Gorham.
Near the Rebel's Head Quarters, 29th Nov. 1776.
Pursuant to your orders I marched at half an hour after five
o'clock this morning, to attack the rebels, . . . [16 lines
on approach] But just as we reached the top of the hill, I
heard them beat to arms, on which the men gave a loud huzza,
and ran like lions. . .
The rebels who occupied the house darted out of it at our
approach, and fired as they fled, leaving only a Negro man
behind, who beat the drum. . . [2 paragraphs, signed] Thomas
Batt, Major R. F. Americans
