Albany, (New-York) July 8.  The following deposition was
made by James Butterfield and John Brown, who have made
their escape from the enemy in Canada, and just arrived in
this city.

American prisoners]
. . . M'Alpin retired to his quarters, and sent for one
Charles Grandeson, a Continental soldier, who could play
upon the violin, M'Alpin ordered him to play, the prisoner
refused, he was then ordered to the guard house, where he
received sixty-five lashes on the bare back, and was then
released.
