The Chevalier de la Luzerne, minister plenipotentiary from
his most Christian Majesty to the United States of America,
having fixed upon the 15th of July for the celebration of
the birth day of the Dauphin, a prodigious number of people
resorted from all parts to this city and its neighbourhood
to testify the part they took in an event that has crowned
the wishes of our august ally.
. . . [6 more lines]
At nine in the morning his Excellency invited to his
apartments all the French, resident in Philadelphia, to
return thanks to the Supreme Being for the late blessing he
has bestowed on the nation; this act of devotion was
concluded with singing the Te Deum, . . .
At the same time was presented to him, an ode replete with
patriotism and enthusiasm, upon the birth of the Dauphin,
composed by Mr. Smith, a young lawyer, who displays a great
genius. A lady equally manifested her patriotism by a fine
ode upon this event, but we are not authorised to give her
name.
. . . [6 long paragraphs describing the edifice and stage
for the event]
The entertainment began with a concert, succeeded by
fireworks, of superior and unrivalled excellence, and a
brilliant ball. At one in the morning supper was served up,
followed by a continuation of the ball, and joy did not
cease to sparkle in the eyes of every one present.
