To the Public. On Monday the 16th of January, 1780, an
Academy will be opened for teaching the Art of
Fortification, Painting Likenesses, landscapes, flowers, &c.
and to perfect the Academy, I hereby give notice, that every
gentleman known by the Public to be a friend to the Art of
Painting, also Musicians, are very humbly desired to honor
the Academy with their presence, where they shall be taught
the Languages, or Painting, on condition they will be so
kind as to give their advice on those arts which they are
masters. By the assistance of the Gentlemen Painters we
shall teach that art to perfection, and by that of the
Musicians we shall have the happiness to procure for the
Academy a Concert of Music, as regular as possible. The
Academy will be open to the American Officers at all times,
except that fixed for the ladies: the generosity with which
those brave men offer their lives and fortunes for the
liberty of their country, deserves every mark of respect,
but the number cannot exceed thirteen, the room being so
small.
Except gentlemen of public character, no person will be
admitted without being presented by some Academican, and
voted by the third part.
Every poor young gentleman sent to the Academy by his
Excellency the President of this State, shall be taught
every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from three o'clock in
the afternoon till five, not only for the honor of the
recommendation, but also for making everyone sensible that
it is very honorable to be industrious and willing to
receive education.
As the intention of the subscriber is to pay respect to all
those persons of character who intend to honor his Academy,
he thinks himself obliged to shew his intention of promoting
good order and harmony, so that every one before he may be
admitted, must agree to the following articles:
  1. That not a single word shall be spoken against any
religion.
  2. That respect shall be paid to all Professors and
Masters, as long as they shall be in the right, in the
opinion of the Academy: and in case any person should be
found guilty of any of those offence by a majority of votes
of the Academy, the penalty shall be thirteen Guineas,
delivered to the Overseers of the Poor. So help us God.
  3. As all Professors and Academicans will trust in the
Academy all their models, books, paint, &c. great care shall
be taken not to carry away from the Academy any thing of
that kind.
    QUESNAY DE GLOUVAY
N.B. The Painting Academy for gentlemen will be open every
Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from eight o'clock till ten.
The Ladies from eleven till one in the morning.
The Academy of Languages for ladies shall be open every
Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, from three o'clock till
five. That for gentlemen from six till nine in the
afternoon; in which time the Concert shall be every three
weeks. The Academy shall be in a genteel private house in
Front and Spruce-Streets.
