From Juliet Grenville: or, The History of the Human Heart;
by Mr. Brooke.
Gustavus Adolphus [King of Sweden] came young to the throne.
One night, while he danced disguised at a ball that was
given by his chief minister, the masque of the fairest of
his subjects fell off, and she broke with a sudden and
unexpected glory on the eyes of the assembly; for though
Adelaide was noble, her prudent mother had secreted her far
from Court, and had tenderly brought her up, like the lilly
of the vale, unseen and unsullied.

Adelaide]
