Portsmouth, June 22. [Report of a visit by the King to
Portsmouth]
His Majesty stopped at no place on his journey but at
Petersfield, where a breakfast was prepared; all the bells
of the towns through which he passed were rung on the
occasion, and that two guineas and a half were given to the
ringers at each place.
. . . Tuesday evening the Jews Synagogue was illuminated and
ornamented within with flowers, &c. when the Jews all
assembled, and prayed for his Majesty and the Royal Family,
and sung several psalms and an acoustic ode on his Majesty,
wrote on the occasion, accompanied with musical instruments,
till 10 o'clock, when they went in procession from the
Synagogue towards the dock, each with a wax taper, singing
God Save the King, accompanied with musical instruments.
The prayers continued every evening during his Majesty's
stay.
