A Dialogue between Orator Puff and Peter Easy, on the
proposed plan or frame of Government. . . [near end of
article, the orator compares the Frame of Government to a
puppet show:]
Orator:. . . Our bright men judged, that as all people are
so much diverted with a puppet show, they ought to have a
Frame of Government so much resembling it, that they might
be equally directed with that too. it is true the success
has not answered yet; but that is, because the people have
not yet seen the political puppet show play'd off. -- But,
what will they say, when they see all the puppets put in
motion. There is to be a Lawyer, a Doctor, a Colonel, A
Major --- &c. in the Council, and a ---- in the supreme
court. Our leaders will be the puppet show men. Each of
them will be as snug as O in a corner. They will hardly be
perceived. Presently, they will touch the secret springs.
Oh! what a bustle there will then be on the public stage!
jump Lawyer--dance away Doctor---softly Colonel---briskly
Major---&c. --it will be an excellent entertainment, and
all "for the public good, " as the saying is.--- Peter, we
shall be as happy as they were in England, when the twelve
judges of the Kingdom kept up the good old custom of dancing
gravely in their furr'd gowns round a fire in the middle of
a Hall.
Peter: I must acknowledge, there will be a great
resemblance between our new Government and a puppet show,
tho' I did not attend to it till thou hast explained it.
