Intelligence from Stratford. Wednesday morning, about eight
o'clock, the jubilee began, by firing of several pieces of
cannon; immediately after which, the principal ladies were
serenaded under their windows with hautboys, flutes,
clarinets, and guittars, accompanied with songs by Mr.
Dibdin, Mr. Vernon, &c. &c. This ended, the ladies and
gentlemen repaired to the great-booth, to a grand breakfast,
were they were entertainment with vocal and instrumental
music. . . .
The principal vocal performers, were, Mrs. Badely, Mrs.
Barthelemon, Miss Weller, a scholar of Dr. Arne's, Mr.
Vernon, Mr. Champness, &c. first violin, by Mr. Richards,
conducted by Dr. Arne. From the church the company
returned to the great book to dinner, where they were
elegantly entertained, Mr. Garrick acting as steward. After
dinner the company were diverted with catches and glees, and
variety of new songs, written and composed on purpose for
the jubilee. After tea and coffee, the company retired to
their respective apartments to prepare for the ball, which
was very brilliant, and the evening concluded with superb
fireworks. The whole was conducted with the greatest
decorum, and gave general satisfaction.
This day is to be opened, with the firing of cannon, and
serenading the ladies as before, but there will be no public
breakfasting, (the booth being preparing for the ode, )
which, at eleven o'clock, will be spoken by Mr. Garrick, and
sung by Mr. Vernon, Mrs. Barthelemon, and Mrs. Baldey.
After this the procession is to begin, when all the
performers assembled for that purpose, and drest in
character, are to go two by two to Shakespeare's statue,
which is to be crowned with laurels. The tragic muse will
be represented by Mr. Yates, of Covent Garden Theatre, Mrs.
Barry being too ill to attend.
