Last Monday the anniversary of American independence was
celebrated here with demonstrations of joy suited to the
happy occasion. Salutes were fired at noon from the forts
and posts in this state. An elegant entertainment was
provided at Cold-Springs; at which were present the
honorable Major-General Gates, Brigadier-General Glover,
with several other gentlemen of the army and town, and a
number of ladies. After dinner the following toasts were
drank. . . In the evening there was an exhibition of fire-
works, which closed with 13 rockets, and celebration was
concluded with a splendid ball.
