[from London] Castlecary (Scotland) Aug. 8. Last Thursday
one Logan, who had paid his addresses to a woman of the name
of Stirling, for two years past, at length obtained her
consent to marry him. . . [Next day she set off attended by
all her friends and neighbours to the number of 50 or more
to meet the bridegroom, who, on their near approach,
suddenly altered his mind, slipt out at the back door, and
ran off into the adjacent woods.] The bride was no ways
discouraged at this sudden and unexpected disappointment,
but immediately dispatched some of her friends to the woods
in quest of the bridegroom, and in the mean time ordered the
music to play up, Because He Was a Bonny Lad, I Bid him Ay
Come Back Again, and entertained the company with much good
humour and pleasantry; finding on the return of her friends,
that the bridegroom could nowhere be found, she concluded
the entertainment with uncommon spirit, by leading down a
country dance to the tune of I Lost My Love, and I Care Na.-
-The company were so taken with the bride's surprizing
gaiety on this trying occasion, that they raised a handsome
subscription to her, which perhaps may induce the bridegroom
to return from his lurking hole.
