23 Mar 1765:31 (127)
A few days ago, as I was rambling thro' the streets, in
search of novelty, I accidentally stumbled over the
following epistle, with the seal and direction entirely wore
off, which as it diverted me, I send you the very original .
. .
   Juan Fernandez, Sept. 30, 1764. Dear Alek . . . About
ten days ago his lordship opened his court for the dispatch
of business, when his commission was read in the pretorium,
before all the officers of the court, and the gentlemen and
ladies of the island. After which his lordship made a grand
ball, which was opened by James McFugh, Esq; and Miss Jenny
Mackay. The entertainment was very elegant, and the ladies
made a glittering appearance. . . [signed] Andrew McDougall.
