When any careless sinner, young or old, begins to be
awaken'd, to be concern'd for his soul, and desirous to flee
from the wrath to come, he is cast directly into a fit of
seriousness . . . the common prescription of one and all,
friends and relations, too general is . . . "divert him with
a game at cards, with some pleasant history, or merry play-
book."
