Your mirisical rescript, interposed in the last hebdomadal
paper on the subject of saltation, merits an eulogy. Lignum
vitae gum is a wondrous deobstruent, and a specific against
a catapsis; ergo, your intersemination of an ingredient of
such efficacity, was optable. It is incongruous as well as
contumelious, and a piece of insulsity, to suggest or even
opine, that the female men, part of our own species, though
of a diverse gender, should become more prurient by that
optable saltatory divertisement. Plato saith, "Jucundity is
generated by dancing, and the corporal quassation
invigorates the nervous system, and is preludious of sanity.
He nowhere saith, that ladies by the agitation, contract a
pruriency: And I can't find that Plutarch, in his book de
Re, avereth any such thing.---Those ought to be exsibilated,
who, making shipwreck of their wily talents, opprobriously
insinuate that ladies are deserving of probrosity. But you
are highly laudative in detecting the endeavours made to
palliate the conspicuous effects of dancing. To the
illustration of the utility of dancing, by a condescention
so profund as that hard metal called marble, you have
responded in such a manner as exhibits many hidden beauties.
To mitigate the virulency of the vice, and fallaciousness of
dancing, seemed the design of the fautor of that exercise;
but you have admirably proved that rashness of judgment, or
a catopsis, was his guide in the attempt.---The printer
saith your piece came recommended; one must have the myopia,
or rather the dysaesthesia that can't see that it
recommended itself.---The efflorescency of the stile, the
truculent vituperations of the virulency of the vice, the
grandisonous expressions, above all the lucid order, will
make it endure to perennity. I am, profund Sir, your most
humble servant, Bathos. Providence, Feb. 12, 1763.
