Extract of a letter from Georgia, dated Jan. 2. It is with
great concern I now sit down to inform you that Savannah is
in the possession of the enemy . . . [1 column]
One captain, 5 lieutenants, 6 serjeants, 1 drum, 1 fife,
and 108 rank and file, belonging to the 3d and 5th regiment
of South-Carolina, commanded by Col. Huger, were missing
after the action of the 29th Dec. last. Also 3 majors, 9
captains, 9 subalterns, 2 serjeants, 11 drums and fifes, and
145 rank and file, belonging to Col. Elbert's Georgia
Brigade.
We have just received advice from North-Carolina, that
about three thousand five hundred of their militia are
marched for the assistance of South-Carolina and Georgia.
Colonel Walton, it is said, of the Georgia militia, was
dangerously wounded in the late action at Savannah, in which
he behaved with remarkable bravery. He, together with
several of the most respectable citizens of that state, are
on board the prison ship in the river, and treated with
remarkable severity. What a contract between a prisoner's
walking at large, and skipping at every ball and Assembly,
and being confined with the most disagreeable companions in
the hold of a prison ship.
