One hundred and twelve dollars reward. Deserted from
Captain Woelpper's company of the German battalion,
commanded by Lieut. Colonel George Streker. . . [1/2 column,
other people]
Peter Bentis, country born, 5 feet 5 inches high, a
labourer, fair complexion; lived at Norrington, Philadelphia
county, it is believed that he is with his mother, or with
Captain Tomson, with whom he was as drummer in his company,
and in his house concealed when Lieutenant Shrowder went to
look for him to bring him to his respective company;
therefore I request Mr. Tomson to deliver me my drummer, or
I will put the last act of General Assembly in force against
him for harbouring deserters. . . [14 lines, signed] John
David Woelpper.
Norrington, March 22, 1777. Whereas Captain John David
Woelpper, of the German battalion, commanded by Lieut.
Colonel George Streker, did advertise in the Pennsylvania
Gazette, No. 2508, a certain Peter Penels, as a deserter,
setting forth that he, the said deserter, was concealed in
my house, at a time when Lieutenant Shrowder went to look
for him, likewise requesting me to deliver him his drummer,
or he would put the last act of Assembly in force against
me, for harbouring deserters, --I therefore take this method
to inform the captain, and all others whom it may concern,
that the said deserter has not been in my house since
Captain Woelpper marched his company from the Continental
Powdermill to Philadelphia, in December last, neither have I
seen the said deserter from that time to the time of his
being advertised. I am sorry to find that a man, who should
support his commission with honour should so far degrade
himself, as to be guilty of publickly asserting a notorious
falsehood without foundation; and I now call upon the said
Captain Woelpper to make good his accusation, or bear the
censure of the impartial public. [signed] Archibald Thomson.
