To the printers of the Pennsylvania Gazette. . . . [155
lines, a rebuttal to the previous letter, in defence of the
plays performed; the last paragraph]
The third conclude Head, is an assertion without a proof, I
shall therefore pass it by, till the author can support it
more firmly, than by his own ipso dixit. I am not a player,
though I argue for them, but only a well-writer of the
stage, as far as it conduces to the refinement, edification,
and amusement of mankind. And as Hawkins says, the
nuisances of plays consists in the abuse of them, so may we
add, of all arts, sciences, professions and denominations.
Has any thing been conducive of greater evils among men,
than disputes in religion? Yet we must not infer from
thence, that all religion should be abolished, because it
has been productive of feuds, schifths [ ] and blood-shed.
I am, gentlemen, yours, &c. Philalethes.
