Duke Ernestus John de Biren made his publick entry here. The
magistrates and the guard of burghers refused to assist at
this ceremony, or to take the oaths to him, till they were
compelled to do it by the Russian troops in the town, who,
to strike the greater terror, rung the tocsin, or alarm
bell.
