Extract of a letter from Honey-Lane, near Epping, June 18.
This day being High Beech Day (upon Epping Forest) which is
very famous for wrestling, country dancing, &c. several of
the young fellows gave great pleasure by their activity in
the first diversion. They came off the trippet exceeding
well, and the loose leg was display'd with the greatest
perfection; and when this manly exercise was ended, several
jolly lads took their buxom lasses in hand, and went to
country dancing, with which I was highly delighted, the
girls being neatly dress'd from top to toe, with black pumps
and red heals, white stockings, and Niggle de G's. The
musick playing, the partners setting to and figuring in with
such spirit and vivacity, as was sufficient to animate the
Darbys and Joans occasionally present, and bring to
remembrance the rural pleasures of their juvenile days.
