Edinburgh, Nov. 26. Friday last James Burgess, soldier in
General Stewart's Regiment of Foot, quartered here, received
1000 lashes, and was drummed naked out of the regiment, for
stealing some things out of a house in Canongate. What is
very remarkable, this is the same man who was sentenced to
be shot the 4th of this month for desertion, and other
crimes, who saw his fellow criminal suffer before his eyes,
and who was just preparing for the like fate when his pardon
was intimated to him.
