Rome, August 9. O.S.  After the election of Cardinal Prosper
Lambertini for Pope, he was carried behind the altar, where
the Cardinal's habit was changed for the Pontifical
vestment; after which he was carried in his chair and set
before the altar, whither the Cardinals came according to
tradition to adore him.  After the ceremony the Pope's
election was notified to the people, by a discharge of the
artillery from the Castle of St. Angelo, and the ringing of
all the bells. Then the Pope was carried to the altar of
Sixtus's Chappel, where he received his second adoration. 
About four o'clock the vergers carried him under a canopy to
St. Peter's Church, and placed him in the middle before the
high altar, when Te Deum was immediately sung, and the
Cardinals came to adore him for the third time, and kiss'd
both his hand and cheek. . .
