The following is a copy of a letter written by an Officer of
the French Troops at Bastia in the island of Corsica.
We are quiet here as if we were in our garrisons in
France. The malecontents are about 15 or 18,000 of all
denominations, but not above half armed. . . [9 lines, they
will not hear of accommodation with the Republick of Genoa.]
About 8 or 10 days ago our commander, the Count de Boisseux,
sent them a drummer with a commission, whom they received
with great joy, kept him three days, and regaled him very
handsomely. When he return'd they made a discharge of above
a hundred muskets to express their joy for the commission.
They also hung out a white flag, as a signal of peace and
friendship with France. M. de Boisseux sent the drummer
back again the next day, and he is not yet returned. What
his business can be with the malcontents is an entire
mystery.
