London, May 22. Extract of a letter from Versailles,
Tuesday, May 13, 1777.
The Queen this day gave a splendid entertainment to her
brother the Emperor. At night the gardens were illuminated,
and fireworks were played off. The concourse of spectators
was prodigious. Great numbers of the English were present
on the occasion. Orders were given to treat them with every
possible mark of distinction. They were served with viands,
and admitted to the operas which were performed on the
occasion.
